GRAN CANARIA
Although smaller than Tenerife and Fuertaventura, Gran Canaria is the most populated of the Canary Islands. The beaches of Gran Canaria are of the dark volcanic type but the famous Masaplomas sand dunes are golden in colour formed from sand blown across from the sahara desert. With the island rising from the beaches up to the central peak of Pozo de las Nieves and being cut by deep ravines radiating out from the mountain, Gran Canaria is perhaps the most scenic of the Canaries.
The airport is located on the eastern
side of the island just over 10 miles
from northern capitol, Las Palmas,
and the resort towns are reached by
a fairly good road system.
Visitors to Gran Canaria can
enjoy a variety of watersports,
beaches, nightlife, waterparks and sightseeing. Public transport is good between towns and relativly inexpensive though a hire car opens up the islands many hidden coves and some spectacular sightseeing in the interior.
