COSTA de la LUZ

The Atlantic coastline of the Costa de la Luz (Coast of light) is the western part of Andalucia.

The beaches here are more open and often backed by sand dunes and pine trees. This part of the coast has not seen the high-rise development of other areas. The temperatures are slightly milder and the often strong Atlantic winds and waves are favoured by wind surfers and surfboarders alike.

Huelva province is the north west

coast of the Costa de la Luz and

borders Portugal. Steeped in maritime

history with big connections to

Christopher Columbus, Huela city is

pleasant enough in the centre with its

shopping and palm lined squares,

however, the outskirts are

industrialised and quite sprawling in

places.

Away from the city, this province

has largely escaped any ingress of mass tourism and mile after mile of unspoilt beaches can be found. It is also the home of the Parque Nacional de Doñana, a large area of saltwater lagoons and wetlands famous with birdwatchers and patrolled over by the Spanish Imperial Eagle.

The town of Cadiz sits on a peninsular and as such is bounded by the sea on three sides. It somehow has an unthreatening air about it, perhaps it’s the history of liberalism or possibly that because of its geography you need to be quite ‘special’ to get lost. Where ever you are, you are only a couple of blocks from the sea!
